Alameda Head Start/Early Head Start

Alameda Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that provides comprehensive services to qualifying pregnant women and families with children birth to 5 years of age.  Child development, health and family support services are provided through a variety of program options designed to meet the individual needs of low-income and at-risk children and families. 

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Center Director and support from Program Management, the Family Childcare Advocate (FCA) will serve as a part-time classroom teacher for up to 20 preschool age children or depending upon placement provide Home Base Services to children with developmental and behavioral concerns. The Family Childcare Advocate will also be responsible for ensuring children on their caseload are up-to-date on recommended health and dental screenings, exams, and treatment, and will conduct a family needs assessment and provide case management services for up to 40 families.

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of children and provide developmentally activities that are in keeping with the program’s curriculum and philosophy (Creative Curriculum, Anti-Bias Curriculum and Developmentally Appropriate Practices, PITC and CSEFEL) and reflect and respect the individual development and diversity of the program’s children, families and staff.
  • Support and promote the agency and program mission and philosophy within the agency, program and community, including following the agency and program lines of communication.
  • Conduct Home Visits and/or provide support at the AFS Family Support Services Center as needed depending upon placement.
  • Act in equal partnership with co-teacher(s) in planning and conducting child development activities, supervising meal service, and in assisting children in the classroom especially during transitions, and support parent engagement in their child’s learning.
  • Actively engage parents in their child’s school readiness by sharing information about the child’s progress, answering questions and working with parents in resolving issues in a positive manner.
  • Complete all required paperwork in a timely manner, including lesson plans, initial screenings, notes, ongoing assessments, referrals, individualized education plans, and school readiness goals.
  • Promote the importance of consistent attendance and support parents in developing attendance goals and improvement plans.
  • Support the health and wellness of children and compliance with health requirements by working with parents to ensure that each child is up-to-date with their immunizations and age appropriate EPSDT health requirements, and monitor treatment needs.
  • Conduct timely completion of all required paperwork, filing and data entry, edit and update attendance records, family support services and health related information using the Child Plus database and other established record-keeping systems.
  • Provide resources and referrals at the Family Support Services Center during drop-in hours, and schedule appointments with parents and families on caseload and/or as needed.
  • Work with, contribute to, and serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team by encouraging and facilitating problem solving strategies; accepting supervision, and working closely with direct service staff, program management, agency administration, community partners, parents, coaches & consultants to ensure high-quality services and implementation of best practices

Knowledge, Skill, and Experience

  • Child Development-Associate Teacher Permit required.
  • Family Development Credential and/or AA/BA Degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience in early child care setting or social service setting required
  • Head Start experience and/or Home Visiting experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to access relevant community resources required.
  • Able to organize and complete work assignments to meet established deadlines.
  • Computer literacy required - ChildPlus.Net and Learning Genie experience preferred.
  • Positive, professional and courteous work demeanor
  • Ability and desire to work as part of a team in a culturally diverse environment
  • Second language skills are desirable
